ABOUT THE PRESS

Many important figures and state documents of the Roman Republic have never received book-length treatment in English. Men who held the consulship six times, who ended wars against Samnium and Pyrrhus and Carthage, who built the roads and aqueducts that carried Rome to greatness, survive today as a paragraph in a survey history or a footnote in a scholarly article. The treaties and laws by which the Republic governed itself have fared even worse.

Duo Lepores Press was founded to address that gap. Each of our volumes takes a single subject — one life, or one document — and gives it the sustained attention it has never had: the surviving ancient evidence gathered and weighed, modern scholarship consulted, disputed questions presented fairly, and the whole written in clear prose for both scholars and general readers.

Our books are published in hardcover and share a consistent design, because they are conceived as a collection: a shelf of the Republic's forgotten men and forgotten documents, recovered one volume at a time.

The press takes its name from the two hares of its device — and from the old Latin proverb about chasing two of them at once. We publish two series, and we intend to catch both.
